Candles
WTF is tunnelling?
Ever heard the term “tunnelling” and never knew what it meant? Well, wonder no more because today I am going to clear it up!
Tunnelling is when the flame begins to drop below the top-level of wax, leaving a dry, hard ring that just won’t melt, making your candle hard to light, quicker to finish, and potentially drown the wick at some point as the heat begins to melt the wax right above it.
How do you prevent this?
The first burn is the MAJOR KEY to prevent tunnelling. Make sure the first time (and every time as a general rule of thumb) you allow the wax to melt right to the edge of the jar.
Keeping you wick trimmed to the correct length usin g our Matte Black Wick Trimmer #shamefulplug will also ensure an even burn.
If shit has already gone south and your candle looks like a hot mess, here are my top suggestions:
1. allow your candle to burn long enough for the wax around the perimeter to just soften, before carefully removing some of the larger pieces that will fall onto your wick
2. if your candle has already drowned, then prior to lighting, carve out a small amount of wax surrounding the wick (enough to allow some oxygen to enable it to light) before lighting, allowing a small pool to melt, and the carefully pouring out. Then extinguish your wick, allow to cool, trim to the correct length and follow the rules from here on out.
Help! My wick won’t light!
To get the most out of your candle, you need to keep the wick trimmed to about half a centimetre. By not trimming your wick, the following might occur:
Mushroom wick – this is where the top of the wick expands and is far too long. When you light a mushroomed wick, it will pop and spit ash over your candle. Not cute.
Drowned wick – a long wick can fall over and drown in wax, preventing you from lighting it next time. To save it, you’ll need to hold a flame near the wick while holding your candle at an angle to melt some of the wax, then tip the melted wax out into something heat proof and discard.
Why does my candle have frosty white patches on it?
Frosting is a natural effect of using soy wax and is unique to vegetable waxes. All soy waxes frost and is a sign that your candle has been made with 100% natural soy wax. Frosting doesn’t impact the performance of your candle so don’t stress. It adds character.
How do I stop the top of my jar going black?
This is purely from your wick being too long and the smoke making the glass look black. Simply trim your wick, wipe the black ash off with a baby wipe and you should be back to business!
